Stamped: Communities of Gbaramatu Kingdom is a visual archival project that translates the living identities of our people into the format of postage stamps. Ten communities. Ten symbols. Ten stories that refuse to be erased.

Long before the rivers found their paths to the Atlantic and before kingdoms rose along the creeks of the Niger Delta, the land now known as Oporoza was believed to be a sacred meeting point between the physical and spiritual worlds.

According to ancient tradition, there was a time when the people lived without a central authority. Communities flourished, but disputes over land, fishing routes, and customs often threatened unity. The elders sought guidance from the ancestors, gathering at a sacred spot where the earth bore a mysterious circular mark, believed to be the footprint of the spirits.

On a moonlit night, representatives of the founding families assembled at this sacred ground. In their hands was a revered object—a symbol of trust, leadership, and divine responsibility. It was not a crown of gold nor a sword of power, but an emblem passed from one generation to another, signifying that true authority comes from service, wisdom, and spiritual approval.

As the object was exchanged between the hands of the elders, a covenant was made. The transfer was witnessed by the ancestors, the spirits of the land, and the people. From that moment, Oporoza became recognized as a source of spiritual authority and cultural identity, a place where leadership was not seized but entrusted.

The beads worn by one of the hands represented lineage, heritage, and the enduring connection between the living and their ancestors. The receiving hand symbolized continuity—the promise that future generations would preserve the values handed down to them.

The circular symbol beneath the exchange marked the sacred ground where this covenant was sealed. It served as a reminder that authority is rooted in origin and that every leader must remain connected to the source from which legitimacy flows.
