Aruwei Ruth has built a reputation around service, cultural advocacy, and inclusiveness—qualities she now hopes to bring to the office of Director of Socials of the National Association of Gbaramatu Students (NAGS).
The 500-level Petroleum and Gas Engineering student at Nigeria Maritime University, Okerenkoko, and indigene of Kunukunuma Federated Community, IVA Idumu, in Gbaramatu Kingdom, is seeking to leverage her experience and passion for community building to strengthen unity among Gbaramatu students.
For Ruth, the position of Director of Socials is more than coordinating events and celebrations. It is an opportunity to create meaningful connections among students while promoting the rich cultural heritage of Gbaramatu Kingdom.
Her passion for cultural promotion has already earned her recognition within her institution. As the elected Cultural Ambassador of Nigeria Maritime University, she represented and promoted Ijaw culture through various activities and engagements, helping to showcase the traditions and values of her people.
That experience, she believes, prepared her for a greater responsibility within NAGS.
"I envision an association where every member is carried along, every voice is heard, and no one is looked down upon or left behind," she said.
If elected, Ruth plans to organize seminars, cultural exhibitions, and social programmes designed to strengthen relationships among members and deepen appreciation for Gbaramatu's cultural heritage. She hopes these activities will not only entertain students but also educate and inspire them.
At the heart of her campaign is a commitment to transparency, accountability, and service. She maintains that leadership should be accessible and responsive to the needs of the people it serves.
"I firmly believe that effective leadership is built on transparency, accountability, and service. Therefore, I pledge to be open, honest, and dedicated in carrying out my responsibilities," she stated.
Ruth also describes herself as a good listener who values diverse opinions and believes that every member deserves a voice in the affairs of the association. She sees collaboration and mutual respect as essential ingredients for progress.
As NAGS prepares for its next leadership transition, Ruth is presenting herself as a candidate whose vision is anchored on unity, cultural pride, and inclusive leadership. Her message to students is clear: a stronger association can be built when everyone is given a sense of belonging and an opportunity to contribute.
"I am not just seeking a position; I am seeking an opportunity to serve," she said.
For Aruwei Ruth, the journey to the office of Director of Socials is ultimately about preserving culture, strengthening unity, and ensuring that every Gbaramatu student feels proud to be part of the NAGS family.
